RHET – Food and Farming Day
We were very pleased to partner up with The Royal Highland Education Trust – Fife in February 2019. Over 12o primary school children from local villages attended the event over the one day. The Bowhouse businesses kindly gave up some of their time to take workshops and teach the children about how they run their business and produce their produce. It was great to see the children asking questions and getting hands on with the different presses.
Throughout the day the groups traveled around Bowhouse and into the production units to each workshops.
Clement, originally from Langoustine The Box, introduced the children to his other business and hobby of beekeeping as well as how to identify the Queen bee and the process of collecting the honey.
Hunter, the Balcaskie Estate Apprentice kindly talked the children through the large tractor, quad bike and mobile sheep pen explaining what they are all used for on the Estate.
Futtle Organic showed the children what is used to create a high quality beer. They also talked the children through how all the different parts of brewing machinery worked.
Scotland the Bread hosted two workshops through the day. Firstly the children got the chance to help Connie in the mill with cleaning the grain and then they watched the mill in action. Then the children moved on to The Mill House where they had the chance to knead their own dough and watch the woodfire oven bake there rolls in the hot fire.
Fiona from Bibi’s Bakery hosted a math and pancake workshop. This was to explain to the children how much cost goes into ingredients and how to price your finished product.
Jeremy, The Environmental and Wildlife Development Officer for Balcaskie Estate lead the children outside to the wild game cover that surround Bowhouse. He talked to the children about why it’s important to leave land for the ground nesting native birds that we find in the East Neuk. Jeremy also talked about birds and wildlife that disrupt and destroy habitats and how he is working to manage this.
Lastly Mags from Minick Butchers explained to the children the butchery process, explaining that nothing is wasted.
